Guest Service when I am a customer
Generally I don’t like to go shopping, especially not here in Germany. Yeah, you read right, I belong to the 4 % of “Anti-Shoppers”. And no, I am not ill, there is a reason for it: Customer Service.
I’m not sure, probably it’s because I am working in the Customer Service, so I have a different eye on it then others. But I learned it during my trainee and as well after in my Jobs: The customer is the king. This is what I learned in the hotel industry and one could think this is what all the customer service related districts think. No matter if you call them customer, client or guest. You want them to buy your products, and there are many others just like you, so you want to do everything that they come back to you and not to the shop ABC, the hotel XYZ or the telephone provider EDF, right?
And I have the feeling, that there is something like a curse on me. Or it’s the famous Murphy’s law (known as well as the secret or law of attraction), I have this thought in me, a negative energy and then bang, I meet right that kind of person to that time. Because if I don’t expect something different, I cannot get anything different, right? Okay, on the one hand that might be, but it doesn’t change the fact, that those black sheep in this customer service desert do exist. I do attract them, but if those employees would have a different attitude, I couldn’t attract the wrong ones, because they wouldn’t exist anymore, okay sounds more complicated than it is…
I don’t want to miss to note, that we have as well those “bad customers”. I mean, I was on both sides of the counter long enough, I know what I am talking about. I would like to point out a special type of deficit.
We ALL should always remind one sentence: Do treat people just as you want to be treated.
But to get back one more time to my experience as a customer, I noticed some typical reactions. So when I really have to go shopping, and I really have no choice then ask something, typically in 90% of the cases I get one of these reactions:
1. I do disturb a private conversation ( on the phone or two of the employees have
to get back their memories of last Saturdays party).
2. I really cannot await an extensive guidance, he/she just got abandoned by the
girlfriend/boyfriend.
3. The boss just vented his wrath on the employee, so it is just logical, that I get
all the frustration of the employee, my fault to be at the wrong place at the
wrong time.
4. The employee is not so up to that job, he/she does it only to pay their bills,
somehow by chance they got to this place. They don’t like it, so seriously on the
top of it I do come with my stupid question.
Ok, I might exaggerate slightly, I am, what you would call a burned child. And to be honest, I do experience nice and friendly employees, you might say they know what they are talking about and actually they do like their job, so in that case I’d love to jump up and down and left and right. And yeah, I really would like to jump up and down more often, you know sports is healthy…
